Bacteriostatic water is a sterile, non-pyrogenic preparation of water that contains a bacteriostatic agent, commonly 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which inhibits the growth of bacteria. It is used as a diluent for reconstituting medications or diluting chemicals for research. Unlike sterile water, which is free from any antimicrobial agents, bacteriostatic water can suppress the growth of bacteria, allowing for multiple-dose usage over time without the risk of contamination from repeated needle insertions into the vial.
The vial should be stored at room temperature and used within a specified period after opening, usually 28 days, after which it should be discarded to avoid the risk of contamination. Store at 68 to 77°F.
